Midterm Update (ewww... midterms)

This is a hefty email, please read it all :)
A well deserved congratulations is in store to everyone who has their work up at the Jazz Gallery, wonderful work everyone, what a great team effort!! Now that we have accomplished putting together an extremely successful show (which comes down April 11th), we have a few new things we have put on our plate!
First of all - the Jazz Gallery is open Fridays 5-8, and Saturdays noon-5

Second off, we are planning on future events for the group:
1. SPE (The Society for Photographic Education) holds a conference once a year (which is actually going on right now in Texas). So obviously, this will not be taking place next semester, but the following semester. We are going to try to get a grant to attend. From my understanding, Helen is going to do a little more research for information, if anyone else would like to give her a hand, feel free to get ahold of her to see how you can help out: hgcoggin@uwm.edu

2. Next, We would like to do a gallery day down in chicago, possibly the last sunday of april. Perhaps having a print sale or fundraiser of sorts before hand if possible. Tom posted some information on shows going on down there, and possibly we could do a little more research and draw up some sort of itinerary. Please email me back if SUNDAY APRIL 26 is a possible date for you to attend. We should also make sure there are galleries open that day. This trip will not be funded, so everyone will have to pay their way (think transportation, gallery doors, and food). For transportation, we have discussed carpooling, carpooling to kenosha to take the $5 roundtrip train, or finding out if megabus is an option.

3. We also want to get a photographer to participate with the artists now! lectures. This goal will be more attainable for next semester. I believe Corey is going to be doing some research on finding an artist to visit. (feel free to email corey - cggaffer@uwm.edu - with any other suggestions - huge or small names, it doesn't matter. As long as they are alive. haha)
A list we have started
a. The Park-Harrisons
b. Sally Mann
c. Catherine Oppie
d. Tobin Yelland
e. Jen Davis
f. Scott Paulus
g. Dan Bishop (a local commercial photographer)

4. With mention of the last photographer, who is a local photographer, we have also brought up the idea of demo/workshops. Perhaps bringing in local artistry/photography businesses to talk about how they are approaching their photographic careers and offer us some guidance/inspiration, and information in general! (Some areas we are thinking about are: wedding photographers, commercial photographers, fashion etc) Speaking of which, as "not artistic" as catalog photography is, the Kohl's headquarters is in Milwaukee, and they constantly have full time photographer position ads in milwaukeejobs.com
Perhaps we could contact them and see if they would want to do some sort of workshop with us? Just throwing around a few ieas!

Alright, I think that covers it all! Let me know if you have any questions, and feel free to email me, corey or helen with any suggestions!
Have a great weekend!
Meg
